Every student and parent has the opportunity to meet the tutor they will be working with totally free before beginning to pay for their tutoring.
We believe that the most important aspect of tutoring is the relationship. Student, parent and tutor all must be comfortable and happy for the tutoring to succeed.
For that very simple reason, we make sure that our first tutoring session (our icebreaker session) is 100% free.
This takes the pressure off totally. It allows students and tutors to comfortably use the first tutoring session as a chance to get to know each other. Of course, you want to make sure that the tutor is good before you even get to that point.
Once you know that, it’s important to make sure that the tutor can actually connect and engage with the student they are going to be teaching.
Meet the tutor and learn more about them
These free meetings are a chance for you (and your child) to ask the tutor any questions you might have; about them, their teaching style, or the tutoring process in general. It’s a great opportunity to learn a bit more about them. Now the first thing that usually jumps to mind is things like background and education, but if you have engaged a quality tutor (like any of ours), those won’t be a concern.
The real information you want is about how they are going to interact with your child
That’s where you will find out if your child will be comfortable and happy working together with the tutor.
The meeting is for the tutor’s sake as well!
The first session is also the time that the tutor will get to know the student as well. This is their opportunity to ask all the questions they need to and gain some insight into the student’s life. Things like homework and study habits, as well as the student’s lifestyle and its impact on their study.
Every tutor needs this opportunity to gain an understanding of the student’s learning style and capabilities. The fact that this meeting is free removes the time pressure. Tutors can confidently ask questions without worrying about wasting time or money. This means they can spend the appropriate amount of time learning about their new student without feeling rushed.
Not a lot of tutoring happens in the first session
And that is really how you want it! The time should be spent learning about each other rather than jumping straight into the content.
This way, when it actually is time to begin working on Maths, the student is already familiar and comfortable with the tutor. Which means the initial apprehension has already been dealt with, and students can move forward confidently.
