Tutoring is not what it used to be…

Tutoring isn't what it used to be

When I was in school (which wasn’t THAT long ago), it was not a common thing to have a tutor.

And those who did go the extra mile by having one? They were pretty keen to keep it quiet. I mean, who wants to advertise the fact that they are getting help with the homework outside of school?

The answer, back then, was no one.

But today, having a tutor is more common than not.

As the years have gone by, the education and grading system has become steadily more competitive, most notably in Victoria and New South Wales. In the past, most students got tutors because they were either failing or well on their way. Today, many students have tutors to help them excel in areas that they are already doing well.

The entire stigma has changed. Tutors aren’t the embarrassing secret that they were when I was going through school. If anything, they’re something to be more proud of now. They act like a badge to show the effort that students are putting into their studies.

As time goes on, more and more students (not parents) are looking for a tutor to help them. Which is a very encouraging thing. Because, as tutors, getting past the awkward phase of “I don’t want a tutor” is one of the toughest parts of the job. Connecting and building a relationship with a student is a LOT harder if the student isn’t open to it.

We’ve still got a long way to go with a lot of students, but tutoring is definitely far from what it used to be.
